London 2012 Athlete's Village, Stratford

A significant project comprising public realm open spaces that range from predominantly hardscape areas in front of the school / academy through to expansive softscape landscapes for congregation, play and habitat creation. Linked by a new backbone of roads, footways and pedestrianised links a strong emphasis has been placed on the use of native planting, the introduction of habitat enhancements and the recycling of water.

A robust yet striking palette of materials has been involved – working closely with suppliers to achieve consistency and quality – to the point of pushing the bar on achieving standards across the site wide masterplan.

This was a diverse, high profile project which demonstrated ALD’s abilities to deliver successful landscape solutions of a large scale and complex nature.  ALD created a masterplan wide public realm comprising of a hierarchy of public spaces and places interconnected by infrastructure streetscapes and pedestrianised routes, and provided services that enabled the detailing and delivering a robust landscape scheme that formed the setting for the Athlete’s Village 2012 and the current community of East Village. Responding to ongoing change, and facilitating design execution whilst sixteen buildings were being constructed simultaneously.

Kris recently went and revisited the scheme in September 2018 (photos here), we think you will agree that it is looking stunning and 6 years on its maturing well - a triumph for all involved.

At the RHS Virtual 2020 Chelsea Flower Show Charlotte Harris has taken a lockdown tour of London's parks and green spaces to see some of the best performing plants for tricky garden situations. As part of her tour she stops at  the Athletes Village - this is 1 minute 45 seconds into the following clip, and shows off the beauty of Portland Square.
