Barking Retirement Bungalows

A distinctive yet practical ground floor living proposal for new build bungalows at two sites in the Barking area of Greater London.  Designed under a competitive tender, for the built form integrated with the landscape proposals.  A Home Zone approach was utilized, where vehicular access and pedestrian routes are integrated, aiming to provide a hierarchy of spaces from street, to communal gardens and small private courtyards, from flowing areas of structural planting and wildflower mixes, through to formal lawns and clipped hedges.

With space at a premium all areas of the landscape are multi-functional, and aesthetics combine with practicalities of providing privacy and ensure clarity of location / sense of place.  The sites constraints included a high number of Tree Preservation Orders and sensitive construction techniques in root protection areas, striking a balance between hard and soft landscape areas.
